At the American School of Bahrain, we believe that learning continues well beyond the classroom. Participation in extra-curricular activities is an essential part of a well-rounded education, offering students the chance to discover their passions, strengthen their skills, and build lasting friendships.

Our ECA program provides a wide range of opportunities—spanning athletics, arts, leadership, and special interests—available during lunchtime and after school. These activities empower students to explore new areas, nurture creativity, and develop important life skills such as teamwork, resilience, and responsibility.

Led by our dedicated ASB faculty and enriched by partnerships with expert external providers, the program offers both breadth and depth to meet the diverse interests of our student community. This collaborative approach ensures a dynamic and engaging experience where every student can find a path to thrive.

ECA Facts

What are ECAs?

In addition to the education that takes place within the regular school day, all students should be given opportunities to participate in a range of fun and interesting activities sponsored by the School that encourage them to maintain a well-balanced lifestyle. The students’ participation depends on their interests and the availability of an interested or skilled Teacher or Classroom Assistant to offer particular activities. Some activities are run by outside professionals and will involve a cost to parents.

How do you sign up?

Log into Schools Buddy. Each family will have separate parent and student logins for each family member. Through your School Buddy account you will be able to sign up for activities and see your child’s schedule via the calendar function. Additionally, payment can be made via School Buddy using a credit card. At ASB we run a Preference Based sign up system.

Sports Teams

If your child wishes to participate in a school team there are many opportunities for this. The school has over 60 sports teams in the school year. Here the sport is split into 3 seasons (Block 1, 2 and 3) so your child will have the opportunity to try out for lots of different sports. These teams include Football, Basketball, Tennis, Swimming, Volleyball, Basketball, Golf, Badminton and athletics. All competitive sport teams in secondary run after school over 2 or 3 days per week and on some weekends. The Competitive Sports program will run alongside ECA activities. Trials happen the week before each block of ECAs and all students are encouraged to attend. Your child will need to sign up via Schols Buddy to ensure they have a place for trials. If selected we will enter the ECAs directly into the system. Students/Parents only need to sign up for the trials.
U13 Teams - Monday 3:00-4:30 and Thursday from 3:00-4:00
U15 Teams - Sunday 3:00-4:00 and Wednesday 4:00-5:30
U19 Teams - Sunday 4:00-5:30, Tuesday 4:00-5:30 and Wednesday 3:00-4:00

Individual U13 to U19 sports will train 2 times per week from 3:00-4:00pm
Swimming - will run 5 days per week and students are expected to attend at least 2 sessions per week

Competitive Sports Program (U11)

The primary school teams run as ECAs. If your child is interested to represent ASB in a BSSL sport please sign up for the appropriate ECA. All students who sign up for an U11 sport for the ECA will represent ASB on one of our teams (Sport for all approach)
Block 1 - Football 2 days per week and Basketball 1 day per week
Block 2 - Football 1 day per week and Basketball 2 days per week (Track and Field will be done in PE curriculum)
Block 3 - Futsal 1 time per week
